October 12, 2016

President Damon welcomed us at 715.  Thanks to our Greeter, Turner Lewis.  KJ is our greeter next week.  Diane is the scribe next week.  This day in history Columbus made land fall in the Bahamas.  In 1810 first Oktoberfest was celebrated.  In 1928 an iron lung respirator was used in Boston.  Rotary project highlight of the week was from Seattle.  Rotary First harvest – they repackage surplus produce for distribution to the hungry.  The organization collaborates with farmers, truckers, volunteers and food banks to move food that might otherwise go to waste to food banks and meal programs for those in need.

Not In attendance: Mark Ethier, Booie Fagelson, Bob Fagelson, Amelia Farnum, Lisa Fitzgerald, Jerry Goldberg, Sandy Ladd.

Guests (names may not be fully correct) –  Student Rotarians (see below), Kay Lewis (Turner’s incredible spouse), Bethany Martin (former Student Rotarian), Evelyn of Sadie fame and Erin O’Keefe (who has been approved as a new member and will be inducted next week).

  • Josh made the final announcement about Sunday’s Disc Golf tournament.  Sadie mentioned the Google Link for sign-ups and Dan passed around the sign-up list and said everything is in good shape.  Josh informed us that Frisbee is “a lifelong skill”.  Grill opens sometime between 10:30 and 11:00.
  • On November 2 we will have a “water” speaker from Rotary
  • Wine Club - $99/quarter for the club.  If interested, please see Damon
  • Toni – Passed out the raffle tickets for dinner.  12 books per person.  Drawing is November 30th. Last year we raised $8,000.  Major fundraiser for the club. 2,400 total tickets
  • Tristam – Flash news from corporate: Rumor that sales team was in compromising situation but this was debunked - $12/bag of coffee.
  • Tristam – A fundraiser for Santa Barbara Rotary club housing project was possibly a horrible waste of money.  Could be a project if there is a shift in attitude.
  • Kevin – Three on three, Saturday, March 18, 2017.  More to come.
  • Kevin – Student Rotarians sign-up sheets.  Each Rotarian expected to sign each sheet, be gregarious, sit with them at a meeting, talk to them, exchange ideas, etc.  If you haven’t signed each of their sheets by the end of the school year, it will cost you a dollar per unsigned student.
Cards –   Three of spades.  In the deck, all losers.

Bowl of Life – There was none today.

Guest Speakers – Marcy Caulkins – brought a lot of samples from her Haunted House.  She feels that Halloween is a community holiday – you knock on people’s doors and ask for things.  Their house has become a special part of people’s memories.  There is a whole community of home haunters.  This is their second year of doing this.  She then showed off some of the items such as the full sized ghoul and she showed how he was made.  Another was a scarecrow with a pumpkin head.  Passed around pumpkins, skull candle holder, zombie head (idea from stalloween.com).  Showed off her Great Pumpkin that has a fire-and-ice light inside.  Stoneykins.com for pumpkin face templates.  She did a brief demonstration of the painting technique.  First step to get into the Halloween spirit is music, next is black tee-shirt which is mandatory, then a brain apron, mentioned corpsing technique and showed how she would dress a skull with cotton dipped in paint.  (Stiltbeaststudio is a favorite on YouTube.  Demonstrated her dry brushing technique.  Basic idea – don’t stop until it looks good.  Also “what does the prop want to be?”  Haunted House is on Springfield on Park Street near the hospital.

Adjourned at 8:30am after the four-way test.
