November 5, 2014

Members smilin’ thru this ayem:

            Alisa B, Marcy C, Dan D, Nick DuB, yours truly, Scott G-M, Tristam J, Sandy L, James M,    Lawyer, Jen M, President T, Jason P, Jon S, Toni C, Will S, Valerie S, Jill T, Linda T, Josh T, and       Kevin Y.

Guests enjoying our company (oh, and we theirs):

Joe Little (Nooner), Mlle. Murcheson, Talia Loevy-Reyes, John Mabie (also Nooner, I think), and the two Gordon-Macey heirs.

Alas, no student Rotarians today!  (… and I was like totally gonna sign their sheets!)

Led by Jon Secrest we pledged our allegiance to a far-flung flag.

President Todd’s quotation for the day expressed a lesson he’s confessedly “still working on:”

“It is better to keep your mouth closed and let people think you are a fool, than to open it            and remove all doubt.”

Who else but Mark Twain, right?

Announcements:

  • Linda T – A reminder re Trivia Night -- next Wednesday 12th).  From December forward TN will move to the second Monday of the month and will happen at the American Legion Hall.  $20 required to pay for a bartender (I think I got that right… ?).
  • Kevin Y – Project Feed pickups will start on Monday, 10 November.  A calendar was sent around to fill in…  If you weren’t at the meeting, contact Kevin and he’ll slot you in.
  • James M – Levied a $5 fine on himself for streaking.
  • Someone:  There’s a Board Meeting tomorrow (probably took place this morning as you read this).  Board could use “Members at Large.”  So show up at WKVT at 7:15 a.m.  There are usually donuts.

Brags:

  • Tristam J for Josh T for good inter-club relationship building (he attended a Nooner meeting and ate the salad!).
  • Sandy L re her widowed Dad and how “schlepping” Sandy’s late Mon’s jewelry from here to there opened a door to his feelings on his wonderful life with his wife… A lovely brag, Sandy.
  • Marcy C re Halloween at the Caulkins’s – all pumpkins and 300 trick or treaters
  • Kevin re his current MS condition… how his latest MRI (done at BMH) revealed that he’s stabilized.   No significant changes in his brain lesions.  And no new lesions.  SUCH GOOD NEWS, KEV!
  • James M, L re working with the gang on the Morningside Shelter project.  Although they didn’t finish, Jon, Sadie, Josh and Todd did great work!
  • Dan Deitz re celebrating “2-15” with his Nancy.
  • Linda T re havin’ a good time at a Fleetwood Mack (love them!) concert in Connecticut.
  • Josh re Noontime Rotary.  Nice lunch.  Marty Cohn’s illustrious speakers made the day!
  • Alisa B re Jen Moyse’s latest show:  “The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde.”  Excellent!
  • Joe Little re Josh, thanking him for nice brag re the Noon Club and re Toni for being, well, Toni.
  • Todd re his daughter’s 600 mile, six-month biking and skiing sojourn to Canada.  There’s a raffle!!!

Cahds.  Will S held the 3 o’ Hearts, winning the $8 pot!

Late announcement by Jen M:

The club has a commitment to serve dinner at the Overflow on the second Fridays of each month.  We think it’s pasta night.  (Mine:  Think beyond lasagna, right?

The Bowl of Life:

“I had my picture taken with Ronald Noble, the Secretary General of Interpol.”

Turned out it was Linda T, who’d attended a UNH graduation at which Secretary Noble was the guest speaker. Circumstance brought them together -- and the rest is photo history!  Note:  Too few of us seemed to know what Interpol is!!!

Today’s Speaker:  Mark Loevy-Reyes

  • Mark did a splendid job telling us all about the Court Diversion Program and Youth Service’s Restorative Justice Program – and the work he and his colleagues do with young people who’ve gotten themselves into difficulty.
  • There are panels that meet once a month for two hours – open to whoever would like to volunteer. Contact Mark to find out more.
  • Mark also talked about the Youth Substance Abuse Safety Program (YSASP) that works with about 300 young people a year whose actions have resulted in difficulty in driving, etc. (suspended licenses, unpaid fines, etc.) and how to work plans out so they can regain their mobility, etc.
  • Attorney John Mabie, who has experience with clients caught up in some of this, heartily endorsed Mark’s program.
  • Thanks to Mark for an eye-opener… well worth hearing about!

Respectifully submitted, voluntarily:    Jerry G
