Brattleboro Sunrise Rotary Club
Student Rotarian Program
As part of Rotary's commitment to vocational service, membership in the Brattleboro Sunrise Rotary Club through the Student Rotarian Program is offered to area High School Juniors and Seniors. Our Student Rotarian program is designed to be pro-active for the students rather than just passive attendance at a few meetings. Our Student Rotarian (SR) will have the opportunity to experience the essence of Rotary first hand.
The number of participating students will be six (6) per school year drawn from area schools including but not limited to Brattleboro Union High School, Windham Regional Career Center, Hinsdale High School, Austine and SIT. Students are to be selected by the school(s) based on their own established criteria as defined by the school's administration. There are no academic or honors pre-requisites. The only requirement of the Brattleboro Sunrise Rotary Club is that each student genuinely wants to participate in the program and be available for weekly meetings. It is expected, however, that SR’s will NOT miss more than 2 meetings without an excused absence due to illness or health related issues, school commitments, vacation, etc.
With 6 Student Rotarians, our intention is to have the students alternate meetings throughout the year. This will afford each student to attend at least 2 meetings per month. All SR’s, however, will attend the first meeting of the semester. This will allow the students to get acquainted with the Rotarians and provide an opportunity to orient the students to Rotary.
Student Rotarians are encouraged to become involved in all club functions on a volunteer basis with the expectation that they will actively participate in at least ONE club project or event during the year. At their final meeting of the semester, each participant will be asked to give a report to the Club about their experience as a Student Rotarian.
The Brattleboro Sunrise Rotary Club meets weekly for breakfast at 7am, the meeting begins at 7:15 and concludes at approximately 8:30am. Occasionally meetings are held at other locations for program purposes. There will be no charge to Student Rotarians for dues, breakfasts, dinners or any other club activities they choose to participate in as "Student Rotarians”. Each Student Rotarian will be encouraged to invite a teacher or other school staff member to be their guest at one meeting during the semester. In addition, an administrator or teacher from each participating school is invited to attend the initial meeting as guests of Rotary to establish a level of understanding of the Brattleboro Sunrise Rotary Club and the Student Rotarian program necessary to support and assist their SR during the semester.
Members of the Brattleboro Sunrise Rotary Club will be asked to volunteer to participate in the program by acting as weekly "mentor buddies”. It is assumed that each school has established procedures for parental approval for release from school and use of private transportation for travel between school and the Rotary meetings. It is assumed the Student Rotarian will arrange parental permission to travel from home to the Rotary meetings. We can arrange for rides to and from the meetings if necessary.
Our primary goal is to foster good relationships with students, their school, administrators, and teachers and to provide the opportunity to experience what it means to be a Rotarian.
